Terms of Use
Last updated: 22 April 2026
KanaFluency is a free web application for learning Japanese hiragana and katakana. By using the site you agree to the terms below. If you do not agree, please stop using the site. These terms are written in plain English so everyone can read them — no legalese games.
1. The service
KanaFluency provides drills, reference charts, stroke-tracing practice, and written guides to help you learn hiragana and katakana. There are no user accounts. Your progress, preferences, and statistics are stored on your own device using browser localStorage. We do not collect, store, or transmit that data to a server.
The service is offered free of charge. It is supported partly by advertising revenue from Google AdSense, which is displayed on our content pages (guides and reference pages). Drill and practice screens do not show ads.
2. Acceptable use
You may use KanaFluency for personal study, classroom teaching, or any other non-commercial educational purpose. You agree not to:
- Attempt to disrupt, overload, or break the service for other users.
- Scrape content in bulk for republication without credit or a link back.
- Reverse-engineer paid or premium features into a paid competitor (KanaFluency has no paid tier, but this clause guards against future changes).
- Use the site to distribute malware, unlawful material, or content that infringes third-party rights.
3. Content & attribution
Written guides and explanations on KanaFluency are original content. Stroke-order data is sourced from the AnimCJK project, derived from KanjiVG by Ulrich Apel, used under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0. Any republished stroke data must carry the same attribution. See our about page for the full credits list.
You may share your own progress URLs freely. The progress-card link contains only a compressed snapshot of your mastery grid — no personal data, no identifiers.
4. No warranty
KanaFluency is provided on an "as is" basis. We work hard to keep the content accurate and the site reliable, but we do not guarantee the site will be error-free, available at all times, or suitable for any particular purpose. Japanese language is nuanced; where a guide offers a rule of thumb, real-world usage may vary. Consult a qualified teacher for anything that matters.
5. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, KanaFluency and its contributors are not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential loss arising from your use of the site. Your sole remedy if you are dissatisfied is to stop using the service. Because KanaFluency is free, no refund is possible or applicable.
6. Changes
We may update these terms from time to time to reflect new features or legal requirements. When we do, we will update the date at the top of this page. Continued use of the site after a change counts as acceptance of the new terms. For substantive changes that affect your privacy, we will also update the privacy policy.
7. Contact
